USS ELECTION CANDIDATES: Fall 2017

CANDIDATES FOR DRAMA:

1) Dot Meyers (JuniorYear)

    Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

  • I am interested in problem-solving the concerns posed by my fellow drama students. After two years of working in close proximity with much of the program's members and being heavily involved in and supportive of student work and productions, I have become acutely aware of the issues that obstruct the duties and processes, both creative and not, on the ninth floor of Arnhold Hall. I also offer a number of viable solutions to these obstructions, and, with the support of the senate, these solutions will be allowed to roll out with efficiency and success.

Student organizations or additional relevant experience(s):

  • Athletics and Recreation as the university mascot and office assistant, an intern at the New Perspectives Theatre (outside of TNS, located in NYC), an active member of the Communications Committee located in Dallas, TX, and a Thespian in troupe #5290

2) Melissa Hamblet (SophomoreYear)

    Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

  • As the newest program at The New School, the Drama School is still very much developing, both in its student and faculty numbers and its program structure. I want my peers to have a voice with which they can help guide that development. Many students have expressed concerns about the program infrastructure, funding, and policies, and currently there is no outlet for these concerns.
  • As a member of the Student Senate, I will be able to make sure there is sufficient representation of and for the School of Drama, especially in conversations regarding the allocation of funds and resources. Some of my top priorities include the expansion of classroom and rehearsal spaces; the structure of the Creative Cafe and Senior Thesis programs; the curriculum for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Day; and the policies on transfer credits and classes. I promise to keep open communication with the student body and be easily accessible, so that any person can voice their concerns throughout the year.

Student organizations or additional relevant experience(s):

  • Creative Cafe productions at TNS Drama; Acting For Young People, teaching artist; The Shakespeare Theatre Company, teaching artist and office assistant; No Man's Land Theatre Company, founder and resident staff member.

3) Oliver Hoegh (FreshmanYear)

    Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

  • To represent a community as diverse as CoPA's Drama program within the USS is surely a daunting task, but I believe that to represent the voice of concern, reasoning, and my fellow student body, a gentle guiding hand from someone with past organizational experience is more efficient, effective, and fun!
  • With my past experience from student body associations as well as being a stage manager/publicist, plenty of moments where the efforts to take responsibility were necessary. This really brought me to be someone who speaks for the people, not against. Rest assured, anything thrown at me will be taken care of with happiness and excitement to excel!
  • I am sure that I'm not the only one who desires to enhance and further push equity and progression throughout The New School and beyond, but I can definitely say that I will be the one who will make effort and take responsibilities far past the minimum amount to further better Drama and beyond. I am dedicated, kind, and ready to serve!

        Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

    • I am extremely passionate about forming a community at The New School. A sense of community, friendship, and understanding among the student body is something that myself and many people I have reached out to struggle with at The New School. I would really like to get involved with the Student Senate in order to reach a larger, more diverse group of people and act as a catalyst for change.
    • I am the first representative for The New School's CRU club (formally known as Faith and Fashion), which gives me an insight into a smaller community within the university. I have also spent a semester at Parsons in Paris, and can relate to students that are visiting for a semester and want to feel involved or connected during their time here. While Parsons is among the top design schools in the world and fosters amazing careers, I also believe it has the potential to create meaningful interactions with one another outside the classroom.

    2) Julia Gundlach (Junior Year)

        Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

    • I am very excited about this Student Senate opportunity. For a long time I have felt I did not have a voice, especially in an educational setting. Only after coming to Parsons my second semester Freshman year, did I feel I was understood and heard amongst my peers and school community. For this reason, I want to apply to be a part of the Student Senate. I want to offer a voice to those who have opinions or ideas about how we can improve our school and community, and further bridge the gap amongst students at Parsons.

    • Although this is my first year in The New School, I have experience in working as a representative in the student council in high school for roughly three years. Therefore, I strongly believe that my experience as a representative has well prepared me to run for a position in the USS. In The New School, what should be most valued are the voices and the opinions of the students, and providing representation of these views is very important. I can proudly say that this is a job I am definitely eager to accomplish at cost.

          Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

      • Ever since I got into the New School (coming all the way from beirut-Lebanon for the first time in the united states) I promised myself one thing: Make The New School my home. I didn't have any family or friends when I arrived and now I am surrounded by individuals who admire me, faculty members and teachers that appreciate me and staff members that have helped me out a lot.
      • I have been involved in so many activities, events and workshops hosted by/at the school. CANDIDATES FOR LANG:

      1) Bernadette DeVito (Sophomore Year)

           Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

      • I hope to encourage fiscal transparency within the administration. Students have the right to know and understand exactly where and how their money is going. If students disagree with the way in which the tuition is used, they should have the right to dissent.
      • I believe health and wellness is vital to student success, and should be acknowledged as so by the administration. Student Health Services should have the capacity to accommodate most, if not all, students in need of counseling, medical, or psychiatric services.
      • As a school that claims to protect the interest of minorities, The New School must end the discrimination against students of low socio-economic status by reducing the astronomical cost of food and housing.

           Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

      • I am a low-income student and I understand the discrepancy of wealth that is rampant at the New School. I will represent all of the students who may feel that they do not belong at an institution because of their socio-economic status, those of us who strive to achieve the best grades we can while cramming on the subway and working 40 hour weeks.
      • I believe that higher education is a privilege, but I also believe it should be a right. As a student senator representing Eugene Lang, I will fight to make the New School's financial demands less harsh and to give those of us who fight to have a place at this institution a voice. I will also represent the University to the best of my abilities, recognizing that my place here was not guaranteed and my education is of incredible quality.

      4) Emma Bjornsen (Sophomore Year)

           Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

      • I believe that I am the best candidate for both Lang College and for The New School as a whole because, as a BAFA student, I have a special insight to how multiple programs within The New School operate, and how those programs influence one another. I am a firm believer in a balance of rules and regulations as well as letting loose, and really examining what is the best solution for the problem or question at hand, even if that means bending the regular conventions.
      • With plenty of Student Government experience under my belt, I feel that I will bring a sense of knowledge and understanding to the University Student Senate that will only amplify the propel the Senate into doing bigger and better things for my fellow students, and for the University as a whole.
      • "Being involved in school has always been so important to me, and I only hope to further my experience as an active member of the school community by being elected into the Student Senate. I am enthusiastic about making sure that the students' voices are heard, and that their concerns are accounted for. I would also like to get free hygienic products to women as opposed to them paying for these products.

      • I understand the financial commitment and emotional weight that college can place on your shoulders and I will do everything in my power to lift and justify that weight. We need free-thinkers who ask the right questions and work to drive our vision forward. These characteristics embody all that eugene lang represents and I will uphold these pillars.

      8) Marios Konstantinos Pavlakis (Junior Year)

           Campaign Platform & Relevant Experience:

      • In the words of philanthropist Narayana Murthy, when you run a part of the relay and pass on the baton, there is no sense of unfinished business in your mind. There is just the sense of having done your part to the best of your ability. That is it.
      • The hope is to pass on the baton to somebody who will run faster and run a better marathon. And that is exactly how I view the position of the student senate. A position that is part of a relay of a moral, social and humanitarian progress that reaches not only The New School community, but far beyond its borders. As a result, I firmly feel that I would be the best candidate to represent the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts and The New School.
      • According to Mwai Kibaki, the 3rd President of Kenya, leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed. President Kibaki introduced a free primary education initiative in Kenya back in 2003, which brought over 1 million children who would not have been able to afford school the chance to attend. Upon such moral grounds, I want to represent the needs of the Lang community as a whole and effectively bring to the table issues that either immediately affect or broadly concern students from all spectrums of the Lang and The New School community. Being at The New School, a university that is highly acclaimed for its commitment to social justice, human rights and environmental sustainability, no senate can have mastery of all the issues presented under each respected field. But what a senate should be able to do is to hold mastery in his/her negotiation skills. A student senate should serve as a liaison between the student community and The New School administration that manages to get across all problems that need to be solved and all issues that can be worked on. As a result, based on a variety of academic and professional experiences that have equipped me with a skillset to properly serve this role, I firmly feel that I am the best candidate to represent both the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts and The New School as an academic institution.
      • First of all, as an international student I have the ability to connect and share the same experiences with a big part of The New School student body. In addition to that, the fact that I speak 5 foreign languages further assists me in reaching out to an even wider group of students. As far as I am concerned, overcoming language barriers, even when those are not present, can create a safe environment for students to freely express their concerns. Also, having been the president of the student government at the college I was studying before coming to The New School, has equipped me and has given me the experience needed to serve as a senate, even though the setting was different.
      • Furthermore, drawing from my professional experience, working for 2 years at the Public Affairs Office at The American Embassy in Athens, has exposed me to an environment that its core element is diplomacy, something that should be the major quality of every student senate. Learning from high level diplomats and working for them even at such a young age, taught me how to approach officials and in this case The New School administration in a way that would express the voice of the students in a way that it would be effectively transmitted to the administration. Along those lines, I firmly believe that working towards achieving goals that both Eugene Lang and The New School share is something that can make me the best candidate for becoming a student senate.
      • Working closely on providing support to the Syrian refugees in the Greek refugee camps through the US Embassy was a life changing experience. Apart from the funds provided by the Embassy, I communicated with all the representations of global NGOs in Greece on what humanitarian aid programs were about to be implemented and how the Embassy could collaborate with those NGOs on common projects or by providing help any available funds. That experience was so fundamental to my individual growth, as I had to work on building connections not for my individual interest, but for a higher cause.
      • As a result, I decided to extend my efforts towards human rights and social justice by making my own initiative. Last June my commitment to action was approved by the Clinton Global Initiative and it will be presented in this year’s annual meeting. The name of the initiative is The Integration Program, which aims to enter 5 Syrian Refugee women from the refugee camp of the island of Less to the Greek society buy equipping them and assisting them so as to find a job. This action will give to women the opportunity to make the first step so as to enter the Greek society, being able to start a new life away from their home country. All in all, in the words of Narayana Murthy, when you run a part of the relay and pass on the baton, there is no sense of unfinished business in your mind.
      • There is just the sense of having done your part to the best of your ability. That is it. The hope is to pass on the baton to somebody who will run faster and run a better marathon.
